Insurance for members

As part of your British Rowing membership (excluding Community and Scottish & Overseas), you receive insurance benefits which are dependent upon your type of membership:

*Members holding a day ticket only receive Public Liability Insurance cover for the day of the race their ticket is valid for.

1. Public/Products Liability – £10,000,000 each and every claim or loss, excluding defence costs and criminal proceedings costs, the limit is in the aggregate in respect of Products Liability. Cover is provided by Hiscox Insurance Company Ltd.

2. Personal Accident - which offers enhanced benefits to what has previously been available.  Cover is provided by Aviva Insurance Ltd.

Coach and Umpire members also receive the benefit of:

3. Professional Indemnity - £5,000,000 each and every claim or loss, excluding defence costs. Cover is provided by Hiscox Insurance Company Ltd.

The insurance cover provided by membership type

All British Rowing members holding a valid membership which includes a RACE licence will receive £10m Public Liability cover and Personal Accident insurance under the British Rowing insurance policy for the following activities:

  • Racing in any British Rowing Affiliated competition taking place in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Channel Isles, Isle of Man, Gibraltar.
  • Racing at World Rowing events outside of the UK/British Territorial Islands.
  • Racing at events sanctioned by National Federations of Rowing in their respective country.
  • Undertaking British Rowing approved rowing training activity, including overseas training camps, in a British Rowing Affiliated Club setting based in the UK or worldwide excluding USA and Canada, including:
    • Rowing inland and on coastal waters (up to 5km offshore).
    • Sliding and fixed seat rowing.
    • Coastal sculling – up to 5km offshore.
    • Beach Sprints.
    • Indoor rowing.
    • Strength & conditioning sessions led or instructed by a qualified or British Rowing affiliated club endorsed coach.
  • Recreational rowing in a registered recreational rowing event.
  • Touring in a registered non-competitive rowing event.

All British Rowing members holding a valid ROW membership will receive £10m Public Liability insurance and Personal Accident insurance under the British Rowing insurance policy for the following activities:

  • Undertaking British Rowing approved rowing training activity, including overseas training camps, in a British Rowing Affiliated Club setting based in the UK or worldwide excluding USA and Canada, including:
    • Rowing inland and on coastal waters (up to 5km offshore)
    • Sliding and fixed seat rowing
    • Coastal sculling – up to 5km offshore
    • Beach Sprints
    • Indoor rowing
    • Strength & conditioning sessions led or instructed by a qualified or British Rowing affiliated club endorsed coach
  • Recreational rowing in a registered recreational rowing event.
  • Touring in a registered non-competitive rowing event.

All British Rowing members holding a valid COACH membership (subject to holding required Coach licence/qualifications) will receive £10m Public Liability, Personal Accident insurance and £5m Professional Indemnity insurance under the British Rowing insurance policy for the following activities:

  • Undertaking coaching for British Rowing approved rowing training activity, including overseas training camps, in a British Rowing Affiliated Club setting based in the UK or worldwide excluding USA and Canada, including:
    • Rowing inland & on coastal waters (up to 5km offshore)
    • Sliding and fixed seat rowing
    • Coastal sculling – up to 5km offshore
    • Beach Sprints
    • Indoor rowing
    • Strength & conditioning sessions led or instructed by a qualified or British Rowing affiliated club endorsed coach
  • Recreational rowing in a registered recreational rowing event
  • Touring in a registered non-competitive rowing event

All British Rowing members holding a valid UMPIRE membership (subject to holding required umpire qualifications) will receive £10m Public Liability, Personal Accident insurance and £5m Professional Indemnity insurance under the British Rowing insurance policy for the following activities:

  • Umpiring racing in any British Rowing Affiliated competition taking place in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Channel Isles, Isle of Man, Gibraltar.
  • Umpiring racing at World Rowing events outside of the UK/British Territorial Islands.
  • Olympic Games.
  • Paralympic Games.
  • European Rowing.
  • FISU.
  • Home International.
  • Coupe de la Jeunesse.
  • GB-FRA match.
  • International Umpire Exchange Scheme.
  • Umpires are also covered when attending events in an official capacity at international events within the UK/British Territorial Islands that are not necessarily organised by British Rowing.

Please note that cover for Umpires extends to all activities where the person is operating in an umpiring capacity, including but not limited to acting as Race Committee Chair/member, membership of Umpire committees/panels, Umpire training sessions, examinations, and running seminars.

You will receive £10m Public liability insurance for the day of the race. Applicable for certain competitions only – please see the British Rowing website Day Ticket pilot competitions 2024 - British Rowing.


The insurance covers explained

Public liability insurance provides protection against legal liability for bodily injury to third parties and damage to third party property.

Products liability insurance provides protection against legal liability to pay compensation including legal costs for death or bodily injury, or damage to third party property arising from products supplied.

Personal Accident cover provides a set financial payment in the event of an accidental injury, such as death, permanent disability, physiotherapy, dental expenses, etc.

The main benefits provided are as follows:

  • Death up to £10,000.
  • Permanent Total Disablement* up to £50,000.
  • Medical expenses up to £10,000.
  • Physiotherapy up to £500.
  • Dental expenses & Optical up to £1,000.
  • Hospitalisation Up to £50 per day up to £750.
  • Primary dislocation up to £250.

*The basis of cover for permanent total disablement is any and every occupation

Broken bones covered:

  • Arm (Humerus, Radius & Ulna) or Wrist (Carpals) - £250.
  • Leg (Femur, Tibia, Fibula), Ankle (Tarsals) or Kneecap (Patella) - £350.
  • Skull (excluding jaw and nose), Collar bone (Clavicle), Shoulder Blade (Scapula) - £250.
  • Up to a maximum amount of £1,000 any accident for any one Insured Person.

In addition to the standard Personal Accident cover all members and coaches also receive access to IPRS Health.

If an accident occurs during the Period of Insurance and within the Operative Time which results in a recommendation by Aviva’s nominated rehabilitation agents IPRS, for a qualified medical practitioner for counselling to assist with the wellbeing of the individual concerned, Aviva will organise up to a maximum of 15 counselling sessions in any one claim, if organised by their qualified and nominated rehabilitation agents IPRS.

Cover to protect a coach/ instructor for claims made against them which allege that a third party has suffered an injury or financial loss caused by negligent acts, errors or omissions during coaching/tuition activities.
