Insurance for clubs

Clubs are advised to ensure that all their activities and assets are protected by insurance. This includes:

  • Liability insurance that caters for the full range of activities that they as a club and a committee undertake including any volunteers who support club operations. We recommend that clubs hold a minimum of £10m liability cover.
  • Adequate cover for the clubhouse and equipment.

Standard Club Affiliation to British Rowing does not include any insurance with your affiliation but Club Affiliation Plus does include insurance

Please note that policy excesses apply and will be payable by the club in the event of a claim (with the exception of Employers liability and Cyber liability). These excesses are detailed under the relevant section headings below.

Affiliation Plus

Clubs who have purchased British Rowing Affiliation Plus are afforded Combined Liability insurance for their club. 

Affiliated clubs that are within the following criteria:

1) Have purchased Affiliation Plus and paid their Affiliation Plus fee by 1st April annually.

2) Are based in England and have accurately declared their club members to British Rowing *.

3) Adhere to British Rowing Club Affiliation Rules and Regulations. 

4) Adhere to British Rowing governance.

* clubs who under-declare their club member numbers risk invalidating their insurance cover. In the event of a claim British Rowing is not liable for indemnifying clubs who have under-declared their member numbers and it may result in their insurance being invalidated.

Affiliation Plus approved activities and who is covered.

  • Club training and coaching of:
    • Sliding seat rowing - inland
    • Sliding seat rowing – coastal – up to 5km offshore
    • Fixed seat rowing - inland
    • Fixed seat rowing – coastal – up to 5km offshore
    • Coastal sculling – up to 5km offshore
    • Beach Sprints
    • Strength and conditioning sessions
  • Club racing - between club crews
  • Organisation and running of the club by committee members
  • Club meetings including but not limited socials 2, AGMs, EGMs, committee meetings
  • Offering up to 4 taster sessions for new club members
  • Third party hire to external organisations or individuals of the clubhouse or facilities
  • Hosting other clubs for private matches - up to 4 clubs
  • Volunteers supporting on-water or land based activities
  • Running training sessions or camps away from their set club location - UK or Worldwide 3 provided they have carried out appropriate safety checks and risk assessments

2) excluding socials whereby a club has a bonfire or inflatables/bouncy castle

3) excluding USA and Canada

  • Club committee members - paid or volunteers.
  • Club volunteers.
  • Club coaches.
  • New or trialling participants up to 4 taster sessions at the club - after 4 sessions the participant will need to become a club or British Rowing member to continue to be insured. Please note the club needs to keep a record of those participants taking part in taster sessions.
  • Club members
    • The club liability policy provides club members with member to member public liability cover in the case of an incident arising in a club environment provided the members are adhering to club approved activity and following British Rowing Rules and Regulations.
    • Club members are not indemnified under the club liability in competitive environments - they must hold individual British Rowing Race membership.
    • Club members are not afforded personal accident insurance in training environments under the club liability policy - they must hold an individual British Rowing Race, or Row membership to have full insurance protection.

INSURANCE SCENARIO ONE
Clubs would be insured to host visitors and participants to come to their club however those visiting would not be indemnified by the host club’s insurance policy, unless the participant was taking part in a taster session.

INSURANCE SCENARIO TWO
Club committee members and volunteers will be covered away from their set club location e.g. when running a training camp.

INSURANCE SCENARIO THREE
Clubs would be insured for hiring other facilities away from the set club location.

Cover for your club’s legal liability up to £10,000,000, subject to a £250 excess in respect of Third-Party Property damage.

Public Liability insurance provides protection against legal liability for bodily injury to third parties and damage to third party property.

Cover will extend to include Third Party Hirers Liability in respect of use of the club premises for an indemnity limit of £1,000,000 in respect of any one claim and in respect of all claims arising out of any one occurrence. We understand that clubs may also hire out their facilities i.e. a family birthday party or charity event. Cover will extend to include £1,000,000 of Third-Party Hirers Liability.

However, the Insurance policy will not indemnify a third party that hires the clubs’ facilities if the third party is using the club facilities/space for commercial gain/reward (i.e. pays the club to use the building, but then duly charges guests/visitors a fee to attend). Clubs can receive remuneration for hiring out their premises to third parties, but clubs will be expected to verify that the commercial hirers hold sufficient public liability for this hire.

Products Liability insurance provides protection against legal liability to pay compensation including legal costs for death or bodily injury, or damage to third party property arising from products supplied.

Cover for clubs in respect of claims for injuries made by employees or volunteers, up to a £10,000,000 limit of Indemnity. Protection against legal liability in respect of claims made for injuries suffered by a volunteer or employee during the course of authorised activities of the affiliated club.

£5,000,000 limit of indemnity subject to a £500 policy excess each and every claim. Cover to protect affiliated clubs for claims made against them which allege that a third party has suffered an injury or financial loss caused by negligent acts, errors, or omissions during club activities.

Cover for club committee members up to £250,000 per claim, subject to an excess of £500. Protection for committee members and club officers against claims arising from their decisions or actions whilst managing the club. Cover also includes Corporate Legal Liability i.e. claims brought against the club as an entity.

Cover for the club if they become legally liable to pay damages, including costs and expenses for claims arising from Abuse.

Indemnity Limit £2,000,000 any one claim and in the aggregate dating back to 01/04/2021, cover is stepped back as follows:

Between 01/04/2011 – 01/04/2021 £500,000 any one claim and in the aggregate

Between 01/04/1985 – 01/04/2011 £100,000 any one claim and in the aggregate

Excess: £1,000 each and every claim 

Indemnity Limit £25,000 any one claim and in the aggregate.

Cover to protect the club if they become legally liable to pay damages (including claimants’ costs, fees and expenses) for any claim made against them in relation to a Cyber loss.

Cyber Loss shall mean any loss, damage, liability, claim, cost or expense directly or indirectly caused by any cyber act or cyber incident; loss/theft of data is also covered.

The clubs’ own costs and expenses will also be covered subject to the £25,000 Limit of Indemnity.
