British Fencing Insurance Zone

Introduction

As part of your membership with British Fencing you automatically receive the benefit of the association’s combined liability and group personal accident insurance.

This web page provides a brief overview of how these policies benefit members and clubs, and can offer basic guidance to fencers, coaches, clubs, and club officials in respect of the insurance policies provided.

When does the cover operate?

Both the Liability and Personal Accident insurance apply when a member of British Fencing is fencing or participating in any of the following activities that have been formally arranged by either the British Fencing ourselves or one of our member clubs; whilst participating in official, pre-arranged training/practice, competitions including travelling to and from any venues for these purposes. Cover will also operate during a social event organised by British Fencing or your member club.

  • Public liability - cover for your legal liability of up to £10,000,000. This insurance provides protection against legal liability for bodily injury to third parties and damage to third party property.
  • Professional indemnity - cover for your legal liability of up to £10,000,000. This insurance covers coaches and those in the role of committee members & officers for claims made against them which allege that a third party has suffered an injury or financial loss caused by negligent acts, errors or omissions during coaching activities.
  • Employers liability – cover for a club’s and home nation’s legal liability of up to £10,000,000 in respect of claims made against the affiliated entity for injuries caused to an employee or volunteer arising out of and in the course of their such employment.
  • Directors, officers and committee liability* – cover for a club’s legal liability up to £250,000 per club for claims made directly against directors, officers, or committee members of a club for alleged wrongful acts in connection with the club affairs.

*Please note home nations are responsible for purchasing their own directors, officers and committee liability.

Operation time: Whilst participating in Official, Pre-arranged Training/Practice, Competitions and Official Social Events, including travelling to and from any venues for these purposes.

Principal benefits:

  • Accidental death £50,000*
  • Permanent total disablement £50,000**
  • Hospitalisation benefit £50 per day, up to £750
  • Funeral expenses £10,000
  • Dental and optical expenses up to £750
  • Physiotherapy up to £500
  • Broken arm (Humerus, Radius & Ulna) or wrist (Carpals) £250
  • Broken leg (Femur, Tibia, Fibula), ankle (Tarsals) or kneecap (Patella) - £500
  • Broken skull (excluding jaw and nose), collar bone (Clavicle), shoulder blade (Scapula) - £250

*The death benefit is reduced to £25,000 for individuals under the age of 16 years.

* *The basis of cover for permanent total disablement is any and every occupation.

The level of cover purchased by British Fencing Association for its’ members does not include a weekly payment and the policy is not designed to replace your usual income in the event you are unable to work following an accident.

Incident reporting

It is important that all incidents that may give rise to a claim, however minor, are reported to Marsh Sport as soon as possible after the event.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, the public liability insurance provided will defend your position, should you be sued for injury to a third party or damage to a third parties property. Please note any claims relating to deliberate or criminal acts are excluded.

We recommend that a designated person within your club is made responsible to record any reportable accident/incident. Records must be kept for at least six years, and longer where it involves a person under the age of 18 years. Names and addresses of any possible witnesses should also be recorded. Please ensure your club has an accident book to record all such information. In respect of safeguarding allegations records should be kept indefinitely.

Yes, the BF insurance policy is designed for not for profit committee run clubs, constituted clubs, clubs that have been registered as CASC status, or community group clubs that don’t necessarily have a constitution. 

If you are a club set up as a limited company for commercial profit you are insured if you turnover is below £50K per year, if your turnover exceeds this amount please contact marshsport@marsh.com to discuss a separate insurance policy.

Yes, you are still insured if you use a trading name.

Insurance cover is only available to members who have a permanent UK address. Such members are covered for their liabilities in terms of recognised activities in both the UK and overseas, provided that any overseas trip is recognised/authorised by British Fencing  UK or the Home Nations. Any member permanently living abroad is not covered.
